Our Current State of Water & Filtration solutions.
Hello on this cold afternoon up in upstate NY! Thank you for being here, thank you for taking time to paw through this blog page. Curiosity brings education, and education allows space to make educated decisions! So give yourself some love right now for being curious enough to tap in!
If you have taken the time to read about my journey, you’ll know how I got into this Watery Realm. If not, let me fill you in quick! I had just became a single mom, I found myself in back to back stressful situations in life which transferred over to my breast milk drying up. I knew I was going to have to really get down to the nitty gritty of water because, I was about to have to start feeding my son formula.
I was currently driving back and forth 2 hours to a spring, filling up 5 gallon jugs. At the time I wasn’t thinking about all the risks I could be taking. So I dug into this more to be able to make an educated decision about the water I will be giving my son. Here is a list of the risks to think about when filling up at a spring—
1. Microbial Contamination: Springs can harbor bacteria, viruses, and parasites from animal waste or human activity, leading to potential gastrointestinal illnesses.
2. Chemical Contaminants: Springs may be contaminated with pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers from nearby agricultural activities, which can leach into the water.
3. Heavy Metals: Depending on the geology of the area, spring water can contain harmful heavy metals such as lead, arsenic, or mercury, which are toxic to human health.
4. Algal Blooms: In some cases, springs can be affected by harmful algal blooms, which produce toxins that can be detrimental to health if ingested.
5. Lack of Testing: Unlike municipal water sources, spring water is often not tested regularly for safety or quality, meaning contaminants can go unchecked.
6. Natural Variability: The water quality of springs can fluctuate due to seasonal changes, rainfall, or environmental disturbances, making it unpredictable.
7. No Regulations: Spring water is typically not subject to the same regulations and safety standards as bottled or municipal water, increasing the risk of contamination.
8. Environmental Impact: Overharvesting from natural springs can deplete local ecosystems, affecting wildlife and plant life that rely on the water source.
9. Unknown Source: Many springs may not have a clear or documented source, leading to uncertainty about their safety and purity.
10. Potential for Chemical Leaching: If the spring is near industrial areas, there may be risks of leaching from nearby landfills or factories, introducing harmful chemicals into the water.
After I had come to the conclusion that filling up at the spring had to stop… I then looked at my other options. Next on the list was Bottled Water—
1. Microplastics: Studies have found that many bottled waters contain microplastics, which can come from the packaging itself or the bottling process, posing potential health risks.
2. Chemical Contaminants: Bottled water can contain harmful chemicals such as phthalates or bisphenol A (BPA) from the plastic, which can leach into the water over time.
3. Lack of Regulation: Bottled water is often less regulated than municipal water sources, meaning it may not be held to the same safety standards.
4. Source Uncertainty: The source of bottled water is not always disclosed, and it may come from questionable or contaminated sources, including tap water.
5. Bacterial Growth: Bottled water can harbor bacteria, especially if the bottles are stored in warm conditions or are reused without proper cleaning.
6. Environmental Impact: The production and disposal of plastic bottles contribute to pollution and waste, with billions of bottles ending up in landfills and oceans each year.
7. Taste Alteration: Some bottled waters have a distinct taste due to the minerals or chemicals used in the purification process, which may not be suitable for all drinkers.
8. Expiration Dates: While water itself doesn’t expire, the plastic can degrade over time, leading to potential contamination if consumed after its “best by” date.
9. Cost Factor
WOW! yuck. You can see why bottled water was even more of a HARD no. Next on the list was looking into my tap water of where I was currently staying and learning about tap water—
1. Chemical Contaminants: Tap water can contain harmful chemicals such as chlorine, fluoride, and chloramine, which are often used in the treatment process but can have adverse health effects.
2. Heavy Metals: Tap water may contain heavy metals like lead, copper, and arsenic, which can leach from aging pipes or industrial sources, posing serious health risks.
3. Microbial Contamination: Bacteria, viruses, and parasites may be present in untreated tap water, leading to gastrointestinal illnesses and other infections.
4. Pesticides and Herbicides: Agricultural runoff can introduce pesticides and herbicides into the water supply, posing risks to human health, especially if consumed over time.
5. Disinfection Byproducts: When chlorine is used to disinfect water, it can react with organic matter to form potentially harmful byproducts like trihalomethanes (THMs), which are linked to health issues.
6. Fluoride Exposure: While fluoride is added to promote dental health, excessive exposure can lead to dental fluorosis and other health concerns, especially in children.
7. Corrosion of Pipes: Old or corroded plumbing can leach toxic metals into the water, which can be especially harmful to vulnerable populations such as children and pregnant women.
8. Taste and Odor Issues: Unfiltered tap water may have an unpleasant taste or odor due to the presence of certain chemicals or contaminants, which can deter proper hydration.
9. Environmental Contaminants: Industrial waste and sewage overflow can introduce harmful pollutants into the water supply, especially during heavy rainfall or flooding.
10. Inconsistent Quality: Water quality can vary significantly between regions and even within the same municipality, leading to unpredictable safety levels.
11. Potential for Algal Blooms: Nutrient runoff can lead to harmful algal blooms in water sources, producing toxins that can enter the drinking water supply.
12. Pharmaceutical Contaminants: Trace amounts of pharmaceuticals can enter the water supply through wastewater and can potentially lead to health issues, as the long-term effects of consuming these residues are not fully understood.
13. Forever Chemicals (PFAS): Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are synthetic chemicals that can persist in the environment and human body for long periods. These "forever chemicals" can be found in some tap water and are linked to various health problems, including cancer and hormonal disruption.
WTF!!! All I could think is WTF.
So now what? How can I make sure Im providing my son and I the BEST?!
Time to keep digging. I had a friend who just starting talking about filtration so I started to tap in with her and educating myself on filtration. It’s very easy to get lost in the world of filtration and all the claims that every filter company is claiming. BUT! Once you REALLLLLY dig in, once you start understanding the world of certifications and what you look for and what matters you start to gain the ability to see through all the BULLSHIT out there. NSF certifications is what you want. Cold hard third party proof. Rigorous, consistent testing. I found out the company my friend was talking about held the highest NSF certifications in the world and are the pioneers of the Carbon Block Technology. Their housing is Stainless Steel (which means no molding or leaching plastic over time) with a lifetime warranty and the company itself is older than me, at 53 years and leading in filtration. I checked into my Tap water on EWG.org to see what was in the water where I was, and looked at the performance sheet to make sure everything checked out for contaminants. I WAS SOLD. Top QUALITY is the name of my game. I went with the best, because water is our foundation of life and my son’s life was depending on THAT water.
I truly believe having filtration in tact for yourself and family is the best way to have PEACE of MIND. Having the best filtration system in place means you can trust that what flows from your tap is pure, safe, and free from harmful contaminants. It’s about giving your family the gift of health and security, knowing that you’ve taken the necessary steps to protect them.
With a reliable filtration system, you’re investing in sustainability. You’re reducing the reliance on single-use plastic bottles, minimizing your carbon footprint, and contributing to a healthier planet for future generations. Each glass of filtered water is a step toward a cleaner, greener world.
